15 people have died in the last three days due to heavy rains and floods in Gujarat. Army has been deployed in Rajkot, Anand, Morbi, Kheda, Vadodara and Dwarka. Army and NDRF together have shifted more than 20,000 people to safe places. More than 3000 people have been rescued from different districts. Primary-secondary schools and colleges have been closed in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Botad, Anand, Kheda, Mahisagar, Karachi and Morbi districts. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in Saurashtra-Kutch of Gujarat on Wednesday and Thursday.
Due to the rain in the state for the last 48 hours, the rivers are in spate. Due to this, the low-lying areas are completely submerged. Due to heavy rains, there is so much water on the city roads in Rajkot that vehicles have completely submerged. There is so much water in the houses that the elderly are being rescued by carrying them on shoulders.
Gujarat’s dams overflowed
14 teams of NDRF and 22 teams of SDRF have already been deployed for flood relief. More than 20 inches of rain has been recorded in Rajkot in two days. Three major dams in Panchmahal have overflowed due to heavy rains. Lakhs of cusecs of water has been released from these so far. Due to rain and water being released from the dam, nearby areas have been flooded. The water level of Shedhi river in Kheda, Gujarat has risen so much that nearby villages have been submerged. 15 people were stranded in a cowshed near the river for about 12 hours. They were taken to a safe place by the SDRF team.
More than 100 percent rain in Gujarat, red alert for 2 days
According to government data, Gujarat’s rain quota has been fulfilled. The annual average rainfall in Kutch, Saurashtra and South Gujarat has exceeded 100 percent. 76 dams and ponds in the state are 100 percent full. IMD has said that there is a red alert for rain in Saurashtra-Kutch for 2 days. Apart from this, rain will continue in other districts as well. Winds can also blow at a speed of 40-60 km/hour. An alert for lightning has also been issued in many districts.
