New Delhi: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk was furious on Friday when a judge in Brazil’s Supreme Court ordered the suspension of his social media network X in the country after months of deadlock. This decision is also being discussed in the US. While Elon Musk suffered a setback in the Brazilian court, the tension of the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the US has increased.

In one of a dozen posts condemning the decision, the billionaire linked Brazil’s export ban to the US election and claimed free speech would be threatened if Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz were elected in the upcoming election. Musk is a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump’s bid to return to the White House.

Musk claimed that “the attacks on freedom of expression this year are unprecedented in the 21st century. The same will happen in the US if Kamala comes to power. Listen to what he said.” His reaction came after Judge Alexandre de Moraes failed to order Musk to name a new legal representative for the company. Musk reacted angrily, calling Moraes an “evil dictator masquerading as a judge” and accusing him of “trying to destroy democracy in Brazil”.

Musk had previously declared himself a “supporter of free speech”, but since he took over the platform formerly known as Twitter in 2022, he has been accused of giving free rein to right-wing conspiracy theories. Moraes ordered the “complete suspension of operations” of X in Brazil, telling local authorities to take “all necessary measures” to enforce the order within 24 hours. He threatened to fine anyone using a VPN to evade the block US$8,900.

The social media platform has more than 22 million users in Brazil. Musk shut down X’s business operations in Brazil earlier this month, claiming Moraes had threatened the company’s previous legal representative with arrest for complying with “censorship orders.” On Wednesday, Moraes told Musk he had 24 hours to find a new representative or face suspension.
