Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Saturday that countries like India and China can play an important role in resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Meloni said this on Saturday at the Ambrosetti Forum in the northern Italian city of Cernobbio, where she also held a meeting with visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This statement came at a time when just a few hours ago Russian President Vladimir Putin also emphasized India’s efforts in resolving the current crisis.
Meloni said, “It is clear that if the rules of international law are broken, we will only see an increase in chaos and crises, but it is also clear that with the multiplication of crises, we will have a natural fragmentation of the geo-economic space, that is, in the long run economic globalization and questions about the rules of international law will not go together, this is what I also told my Chinese counterparts, we have to choose, because the two things do not go together, that is why I think that ultimately countries like China and India can and should play a role in resolving the conflict in Ukraine.”
Putin also mentioned India
Addressing the 9th Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin also referred to India’s role in providing a “helping hand” in resolving the issue.
“We respect our friends and partners, who I think are sincerely interested in addressing and resolving all issues related to the conflict (with Ukraine). China, Brazil, India… I am in touch with my partners and I have no doubt that the leaders of these countries, and we have a relationship of trust with each other, will be genuinely interested in helping,” Putin said.
Meloni’s remarks came after his meeting with Zelensky on the sidelines of the Ambrosetti Forum on Saturday, where the two leaders discussed the latest developments on the ground and Ukraine’s “most urgent needs” ahead of winter.
Emphasis on sending weapons to Ukraine
“The head of state thanked for all allocated military and technical assistance packages and stressed the importance of transferring relevant weapons to Ukraine as soon as possible,” Zelensky’s office said after the meeting.
It further mentioned that the Ukrainian President briefed Melanony on the situation on the battlefield, recent shelling of the country’s civilian and vital infrastructure, and talked about current defence needs.
