The country’s largest airline IndiGo is now preparing to become a global player. IndiGo no longer wants to remain just a domestic airline. IndiGo’s share in the country’s total domestic air traffic is more than 60 percent. The airline’s CEO Peter Elbers has shared his plan for IndiGo’s international expansion. He said that IndiGo intends to become a global airline by 2030.
Indigo CEO Peter Elbers told CNBC-TV18, “India will be the third largest economy by 2030. It will be stronger and better connected to many other countries. For this, the airline needs to expand so that it can compete with other airlines at the global level. Therefore, our criteria should be that we focus on doing better at the global level instead of just domestically. All the decisions we have taken in the last 2 years are aimed at becoming a global airline by 2030.”
However, the company’s CEO said that due to this agenda the airline will not divert its focus from its core business i.e. domestic market. According to him, the airline will add business class to its existing 40 planes. Also, the addition of long range A321 XLRs and wide-body A350s will help in increasing domestic traffic as well as global reach.
IndiGo started as a low-cost model and provided affordable and reliable travel services to Indian passengers. The company’s CEO said that the airline will not give up its core philosophy of providing affordable travel services to Indian passengers but will provide more options to those customers who are willing to spend more money.
