Kolkata blast: A ragpicker was injured in an explosion in Kolkata on Saturday, September 14. The blast occurred when he was “near a plastic bag” at the intersection of Blochman Street and SN Banerjee Road. “The injured man has been identified as Bapi Das, 58, who lives on a footpath next to SN Banerjee Road. He is a ragpicker,” a police official said. The injured man suffered an injury to his right wrist and is being treated at the Nil Ratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital. “The area has been cordoned off and a bomb squad has reached the spot. They examined the bag and the surrounding area,” he said.

In a statement, Kolkata Police said, “At around 13.45 hrs, information was received that there was an explosion between Blochman Street and SN Banerjee Road and a person/ragpicker was injured. Subsequently, OC Taltala rushed there and found that the injured was taken to NRS and he had sustained an injury on his right wrist. The area was cordoned off with security tape and then Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) team was called in. Subsequently, BDDS personnel arrived, checked the bag and the surroundings. After they left, traffic was allowed.”

Meanwhile, a person who claimed to be an eyewitness said, “We were standing nearby when the blast occurred. We immediately rushed to the spot and saw a sweeper lying down. The man had sustained injuries on his right wrist. The sound of the blast was very loud. Police immediately reached the spot and took the injured to the hospital. There was a traffic jam in the area. No one else was injured.”

BJP demanded an investigation by the NIA

Union Minister and West Bengal BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar has written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah requesting a thorough investigation into the blast incident in central Kolkata. The letter said, “I urge you to consider a detailed investigation by the NIA or any other central agency to ensure a thorough investigation of all possible angles related to the incident.”
