In the rape and murder case of a Kolkata doctor, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandeep Ghosh, has now been accused of rape and murder as well. He is already in CBI custody in the financial irregularities case. Apart from this, Tala Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Abhijit Mandal was also arrested by the CBI on 14 September.
A junior doctor protesting in this case said that the arrest of these people was an important demand of the doctors, because their role is also being talked about in the tampering of evidence in the rape-murder case. This doctor also demanded action against others in the case of tampering with evidence. The junior doctor said, ‘We were demanding the arrest of former Principal of Medical College Sandeep Ghosh and former Officer-in-Charge of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mandal in the case of tampering with evidence. We are happy that the CBI has arrested them. The investigating agency should also arrest those who have tampered with the evidence.’ Meanwhile, the talks going on to resolve the ongoing deadlock between the junior doctors and the West Bengal government have also failed.
Earlier, on August 10, Kolkata Police had arrested an accused named Sanjay Roy in the rape and murder case of a female doctor in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on the midnight of August 8-9. Since then, till date, CBI had only this accused in the rape and murder case. After this, on August 13, the case was handed over to the CBI. After which, for the first time after 33 days of taking over the investigation of the case, CBI has made these two new arrests in this case.
Since this incident, thousands of doctors and nursing staff have been protesting demanding justice for the victim and safety of medical staff. In this sequence, on August 14, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met the protesting doctors outside her house and asked them to participate in talks to resolve the deadlock.
