Two days after walking out of Delhi’s Tihar jail, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday announced his decision to step down, a decision that has come as a shock to his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers and has even surprised his rivals BJP and Congress. Addressing AAP workers at the party office in the national capital, Kejriwal said he does not crave for power and vowed not to sit on the CM chair until people give him a “certificate of honesty”.
The AAP chief was released on bail from Tihar on Friday in the liquor policy corruption case. After Kejriwal’s sudden announcement, his wife Sunita and Delhi ministers Atishi and Gopal Rai’s names are doing the rounds in the race for CM in his place.
However, the BJP has hit back at Kejriwal, asking why he needs 48 hours to resign and that he should step down today itself.
Atishi replied
Explaining the ‘secret’ behind the 48 hours, Delhi minister Atishi said, “Today is Sunday, tomorrow is Eid-e-Milad holiday, so the next working day is Tuesday. That is why it took two days.”
The BJP alleged that Kejriwal has asked AAP for 48 hours to resign so that either an alternative can be found or some adjustments can be made.
BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi told the media, “The voters of Delhi gave their verdict three months ago, which led to the loss of all seven seats. The entire council of ministers should resign and elections should be held in November. The public is fed up with them.”
To find options or make some adjustments
The BJP leader also said that Kejriwal has asked for 48 hours to “either find an option or make some adjustments.”
Party leader Harish Khurana also questioned why AAP leaders are doing drama. He said, “Why after 48 hours? He should resign today itself. He has done this earlier also. The people of Delhi are asking, can’t he go to the secretariat, can’t he sign the documents? Then what is the matter?”
In his first address to party workers after coming out of jail, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday said he will resign as Delhi chief minister within the next two days.
