There seems to be no end in sight: attacks by the Houthi rebels, allied with Hamas, continue to put pressure on the freight routes through the Red Sea. Accordingly, shipping companies and logistics companies are currently taking the southern route around the southern tip of Africa – a route that is both more expensive and involves overcrowded ports.
The Danish logistics group Moeller-Maersk, known as Maersk, is also affected. “Due to the significant congestion of the terminals in the ports of the Mediterranean and Asia, there are significant delays in our shipping schedules,” the company said in an official statement. “This congestion has led to longer waiting times in various ports, which affects our ability to maintain regular schedules.”
Maersk is trying to minimize the impact of the current logistics situation on customers by rebooking freight onto the remaining route network in advance.
