To counter China, America has given its special weapon to Taiwan. After a long wait, Taiwan finally got America’s Abrams tanks.
According to the news of South China Morning Post, Taiwan will receive the first batch of much awaited M1A2T Abrams Main Battle Tanks from America by the end of this year. This information has been given by the Defense Ministry of Taiwan itself. The sale of these 108 combat Abrams tanks was approved in 2019. Actually, Taiwan wanted to further strengthen its preparedness to deal with any kind of attack. This is the reason why Taiwan is taking Abrams tanks from America, so that China does not repeatedly scare it and threaten to attack it. It is expected that Taiwan will receive the first batch of 38 tanks by the end of this year i.e. in December.
The news of delivery of tanks to Taiwan has come at a time when US President Joe Biden has approved defense assistance worth $ 567 million for Taiwan. The US has announced the largest ever military aid package for Taiwan under the Presidential Drawdown Authority. America says that this was necessary to save Taiwan. This package is almost double the $345 million given last year. China is stunned by this announcement of America. In this way, America is strengthening Taiwan and China is feeling bitter because of this.
Not much detail was revealed about America’s package, but sources claim that it will include weapons stockpiles, armor piercing weapons, air defense systems and multi-domain equipment. Drones will also be included in this package. This will prove to be useful against the large army of dragons. However, on this step, China has asked America to stop providing military aid to Taiwan and has threatened to face consequences.
Actually, China considers Taiwan as its part. China has been saying that if necessary, it will take it under its control even by using force. However, Taiwan considers itself an autonomous country. Many countries including America do not want China to occupy Taiwan. This is why America is committed to providing arms to Taiwan for its defense. Because China keeps threatening to attack Taiwan again and again, receiving Abrams tanks from America is a big step.
American M1A2T tanks can significantly increase Taiwan’s defense capability. If China and its People’s Liberation Army attack in the future, Taiwan will get a lot of help in stopping possible attacks from American tanks. According to the Taiwanese Defense Ministry, these American third generation battle tanks will replace the old American-made M60A3 and M49 model tanks. Taiwan has also said that the American tank M1A2T is better than China’s Type 99 main battle tank. Taiwan cited the superior firepower, mobility and security capability of Abrams tanks.
According to experts, these American tanks include a 120 mm smoothbore gun, which is capable of penetrating 850 mm (33 inches) of homogeneous steel. Its firing range is up to 4,000 meters (13,000 ft) – which is effective for engaging enemy tanks from a distance. It is believed that Abrams tanks will be deployed on the northern coast of Taiwan, which is considered the most likely soft target for PLA attack. The second batch of 42 American tanks is expected to arrive next year, while the final 28 tanks will be delivered in 2026.
