India’s moon mission Chandrayaan-3 was successful last year.Five decades ago the US had already landed humans on the Moon. Now there is a dispute regarding timing on the moon.
New Delhi. Last year in August, India had created history by stepping closer to the south pole of the Moon. Not only India, many countries including America, China, Russia, Japan are engaged in the race for Moon mission. We all know very well what time it is in which part of the Earth at this time, but have you ever wondered what time it is on the Moon at this time? Well, this is something that neither makes any difference to us nor to you. There are two countries which are currently embroiled in a fight over what time it is on the moon. We are after China and America. The fight between the two countries for supremacy in the Pacific Ocean has now come to a halt at the time of the moon.
America is trying to establish a special time zone on the moon for itself and its space partners. Rivals China and Russia are out of the US-led initiative. Beijing is trying to bring its lunar timing and navigation system to the moon. Inspired by the White House’s directive, NASA is taking the lead in introducing a new time standard, Coordinated Lunar Time (LTC), so that exploration on the Moon can be done in a safe and sustainable manner. He wants to do this because at present many countries and private companies are planning moon missions.
International Standard on Moon…
In April, a White House Office of Science and Technology Policy memorandum said the proposed standard timing on the Moon would be adopted by signatories to the US-led Artemis Agreement and is intended to serve as an international standard. The memorandum states, “Time knowledge in report operation systems is vital to the scientific discovery, economic development, and international cooperation that form the basis of American leadership in the field of space.”
What is China’s stance?
The number of signatories to the Artemis agreement has increased to 43, but they do not include the two largest space powers – China and Russia. Instead, Beijing and Moscow are leading a parallel initiative, known as the International Lunar Research Station, which aims to build a permanent base on the moon’s south pole by 2035. China has its own plans to establish a timing and navigation system for the Moon. Namrata Goswami, a space policy researcher at Arizona State University, said China has announced plans to establish a time zone for the Moon by 2028 and develop coordinated lunar communications and internet capability.
