Through various comments, both enthusiasts and critics, they have shared their impressions about the production that premiered on the night of Tuesday, October 8. Since then bitcoiners share divergent opinions about the approach and execution of audiovisual material.
According to the documentary, produced by Cullen Hoback, the lead bitcoin developer, Peter Todd, is the person who is really behind the mystery of Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity.
However, Todd distanced himself from the statements that point to him as the creator of Bitcoin and said in this regard: “it is a kind of theory from someone who spends his time as a documentary journalist,” as CriptoNoticias reported earlier.
«I think Cullen Hoback was just trying to get media attention for his documentary with this nonsense. That would also explain why he chose such an unusual candidate, me.”

Jonas Schnelli, prominent Bitcoin developer, expressed his discontent with the team responsible for the HBO documentary. He argues that claims about who could be behind the creation of Bitcoin lack solid foundations and criticizes the insistence on that issue, considering it irrelevant.
In that sense, Schnelli questions those in charge of creating audiovisuals for the masses: “when will filmmakers learn that Satoshi’s question is irrelevant/boring and focus on the revolutionary power of Bitcoin?”
With his comments, Schnelli suggests that the real focus should be on the transformative impact Bitcoin is having in society, rather than getting lost in speculation about the identity of its creator.

Also pseudonymous indie developer Ratoshi criticizes the documentary from HBO. In his opinion, “current journalism has left aside the commitment to the truth,” prioritizing sensational narratives driven by the dynamics of online advertising. This has led the numerous theories about Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity to concentrate on a small group of well-known individuals in the technological and financial field, thus ignoring a multitude of potential anonymous candidates.
Ratoshi emphasizes that this phenomenon is a result of “survivorship bias,” which limits people’s vision by focusing only on already known names, while the “Dunbar number” it restricts the ability to conceive how many people could have contributed to the creation of Bitcoin.
In his opinion, Satoshi’s true identity could be hidden among those who are not famous or have left digital footprints, which invites us to rethink the ways in which we search for the creator of the most famous cryptocurrency in the world. Furthermore, Ratoshi warns that Revealing Satoshi’s identity could carry more risks than benefitsexposing a figure who has chosen to remain in the shadows to threats of different types.
