The Bureau of the Census, part of the United States Department of Commerce, has released figures for US retail sales in September 2024. Sales, adjusted for seasonal effects and holiday differences but not for price changes, increased by 0.4% compared to the previous month and amounted to 714.4 billion US dollars (658.8 billion euros). Compared to the same month last year, sales increased by 1.7%. Overall sales increased by 2.6% compared to the same period last year. Excluding the volatile vehicle sales, the increase is 0.5% compared to the previous month and 2.2% compared to September 2023. In the fashion and shoe trade, sales are up 1.5% compared to the previous month and 3.5% compared to the same month last year increased.
Sales in the past month therefore developed better than forecast. According to the news channel CNBC, the Dow Jones had expected an increase of 0.3% compared to the previous month and an increase excluding vehicle sales of 0.1%.
