Digital summit: HDE presents 10-point plan

The Federal Government’s Digital Summit will take place on October 21st and 22nd. On the occasion of this summit, the German Trade Association (HDE) reiterated the need for a uniform, nationwide digitalization strategy in Germany in a 10-point plan. In addition to being cautious about too much bureaucracy when it comes to artificial intelligence (AI), the focus is also on creating fair competitive conditions in international online trade.

In times of polycrisis and stagnant consumption, the economic importance of omni-commerce must be clear: namely, that it makes up the third largest economic sector alongside industry and crafts. “A real technology and innovation offensive is needed in Germany and Europe,” says Stephan Tromp, deputy HDE managing director. “There should not be a regulatory patchwork. Otherwise there will be unnecessary legal uncertainty and obstacles to innovation for retailers.”

The 10-point plan consists of the following key points:

  1. AI regulation must keep Europe competitive
  2. Promoting AI and automation
  3. Simplify access to innovative technologies
  4. Strengthen data sovereignty
  5. Expand digital infrastructure
  6. DMA Art. 6 (5) – Ensure non-discriminatory advertising
  7. Same rules for everyone: regulate M2C from third countries
  8. Protect consumers, enforce regulation
  9. Promote digital competence
  10. Prioritize cybersecurity

“The same rules must apply to everyone. International online providers from third countries are no longer allowed to operate outside of existing European regulations,” continued Tromp.
