Traffic light off: Associations call for quick new elections

Gero Furchheim, President of the Federal Association of E-Commerce and Mail Order Germany (BEVH) sees the importance of quick new elections in preserving democracy: “The country cannot currently afford the spectacle of personal attacks from ex-coalitionists. Under no circumstances should people and companies continue to lose trust in our political system, otherwise stable government operations will no longer be possible even after the new elections. That would play into the hands of the enemies of democracy and further damage the political system. The foreseeable consequence would be a permanent crisis with serious consequences for the economy and society, which expect the government to take decisive action, especially at this time. All democratic parties must now show that, in an emergency, they are able to work together in a non-partisan and constructive manner, that they put the country above their personal differences – and that they can give it clarity about the future again with quick new elections.
