New York: A banana stuck on the wall became the most expensive fruit in the world at an auction held in New York, America. This tape-mounted banana was auctioned for $62,000, which is approximately INR 52.4 Crores. But do not think that this banana is ordinary, as it was the creation of the famous visual artist Maurizio Cattelan, nicknamed “The Comedian.” Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun has bet on this bizarre artwork, beating out six other bidders.

The most expensive fruit in the world

According to the New York Times, it became the most expensive fruit in the world after the auction. An auction was held for this banana on November 20, but organizers were surprised when bidding on this work of art rose quickly. This strange artwork became a topic of discussion around the world when Sun, the founder of cryptocurrency platform TRON, bought this artwork for four times its estimated price.

Bananas were purchased for Rs 29

Interestingly, Cattelan’s “comic” artwork is a simple banana, purchased on the same day for just $0.35 (Rs 29) and stuck with tape to an empty wall, according to the New York Times. The comedian’s starting price rose from $8,000 to $52,000 at auction. It was eventually sold at auction for $62 million.

What is a “comedian”?

Caitlyn introduced the comedian to the public for the first time in 2019 at Art Basel in Miami. Its three copies were then sold for $1.20 and $1.50 thousand. Once it was shown, it went viral, and controversy over the art began as well. This installation has toured the world. It also comes with instructions on how to replace bananas when they rot.
