Three people in Uttar Pradesh had a narrow escape when Google Maps showed them the wrong route. The accident occurred on the Kalapura canal, which falls under the jurisdiction of Izzat Nagar police station in Bareilly. Divyanshu, a resident of Kanpur district, was going with his two friends to attend a wedding in Pilibhit district. With the help of Google Maps for navigation, Divyanshu was driving when the app directed him towards the canal track near Kalapura village.
Unfortunately, the bridge over the canal was broken, due to which Divyanshu lost control of the car, causing the car to fall into the canal about 15 feet below. It was fortunate that the canal was dry at the time of the incident. According to local witnesses and police officials, the car overturned and its tires came up.
With the help of JCB and local people, the police was successful in taking out the car from the canal. Dhananjay Pandey, officer-in-charge of Izzat Nagar police station, said the three persons were traveling in a Tata Tiago, and were using Google Maps to go to Pilibhit.
Due to erosion, the road got damaged near Barkapur intersection adjacent to Kalapur canal, due to which the car fell into the canal, he said, adding that all the occupants of the car escaped safely.
Earlier, on November 24, a similar horrific road accident took place, in which due to the mistake of Google Maps, a speeding car fell 50 feet into the canal, because the bridge over the Ramganga river was broken. Three people, including two brothers, lost their lives in the accident that took place in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh.
