United Nations: India voted in favor of the United Nations General Assembly resolution calling on Israel to withdraw from the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, and renewed the call for achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in West Asia. The 193-member General Assembly accepted the draft resolution on the “peaceful solution to the question of Palestine” presented by Senegal on Tuesday by an overwhelming majority, with India being among 157 countries that voted in favour, while eight member states voted – Argentina, Hungary, Israel, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Papua New Guinea also voted. The United States is against the decision. Cameroon, Czechia, Ecuador, Georgia, Paraguay, Ukraine and Uruguay abstained from voting.

The resolution, which was adopted orally as amended, reiterates its call to “achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace without delay in West Asia” on the basis of relevant UN resolutions and to end the Israeli occupation that began in 1967, including East Jerusalem.

What is the proposal?

The resolution called for “Israel’s withdrawal from the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem,” and the implementation of the rights of the Palestinian people, most notably their right to self-determination and their right to an independent state. Through the resolution, the General Assembly affirmed its firm support for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, in accordance with international law, under which both live together in peace and security within recognized borders based on the pre-1967 borders.

The resolution rejected any efforts to bring about demographic or territorial change in the Gaza Strip, including any action that limits the territory of Gaza. The resolution also stressed that the Gaza Strip is an integral part of the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967 and that it “affirms the vision of a two-state solution, in which the Gaza Strip is part of Palestine.”

Syrian territory was also seized

The resolution stresses the necessity of an immediate and complete cessation of all acts of violence and incitement, including military attacks, destruction and terrorist acts. India voted in favor of another resolution in the General Assembly demanding that Israel withdraw from the occupied Syrian Golan in implementation of the relevant Security Council resolutions and return to the June 1967 border lines.

The Golan Heights is a rocky plateau located in southwestern Syria, about 60 kilometers south of Damascus (the capital of Syria). It is bordered to the south by the Yarmouk River and to the west by Lake Tiberias. The United Nations considers this region part of Syria. However, during the Six-Day War of 1967, Israel captured the Golan Heights. 97 votes were cast in favor of this proposal, while eight voted against it, while 64 countries, including Australia, Canada, Israel, Britain and America, abstained from voting.
