Gaza’s health ministry said on Monday that more than 45,000 people had been killed in Israeli strikes against Hamas militants in the Palestinian territory.
The ministry said about 107,000 people have also been injured in the conflict. It does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count, but has previously said that more than half of those killed were women and children.
The Gaza health ministry said in its daily update that 52 people were killed the previous day.
Civil defense and hospital officials said Sunday’s deadly Israeli attacks included strikes on Gaza City in the north, Khan Younis in southern Gaza and the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.
Israel’s military said on Sunday that its operation included an attack on a Hamas command and control compound in Nuseirat.
Israel has repeatedly blamed Hamas militants for operating in the occupied territories, while Palestinians and rights groups say Israeli forces are not doing enough to prevent civilian deaths.
The war began with a Hamas attack on southern Israel in October 2023, during which the militants killed about 1,200 people and took 250 hostage. About 100 hostages are still being held in Gaza, at least a third of whom are believed dead.
Hamas is designated as a terrorist group by the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and others.
