‘Friendly fire’ over the Red Sea highlights mounting tensions
Two US Navy pilots were shot down over the Red Sea in ‘an apparent case of friendly fire’ on December 22. Both pilots survived. The incident, though not a result of hostile fire, underscores how dangerous Yemen’s Red Sea corridor has become. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels later claimed they ‘targeted’ the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman on Saturday. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that his country would act against the Houthis as it has against other Iranian allies.
