The US Air Force is getting new fighter jets
This approval means that the US Air Force can contract for the next generation of combat aircraft. However, Kendall said the final decision will be made based on cost and other factors. It is likely to be addressed under the administration led by Donald Trump. However, the final decision may be delayed further while the incoming administration conducts its own analysis.
Kendall had said in July this year that the NGAD program had been suspended to understand the budget constraints and difficulties it was facing. The cost of the sixth generation fighter is estimated at $300 million. Members of the US Congress must decide whether this cost is justified or not.
What is the NGAD program?
The US Air Force’s NGAD program aims to create an advanced fighter jet that could replace the F-22 Raptor stealth fighter. The NGAD program also includes Cooperative Combat Aircraft (CCA). This semi-autonomous drone will serve as a pilot for the main combat aircraft.
The program was envisioned for the USAF in 2024. Since then, the USAF has researched propulsion systems for the NGAD program. General Electric is responsible for developing the prototype of its XA102 engine. Pratt & Whitney is developing the XA103 engine prototype.
