US withdraws from WHO America will withdraw from WHO again, and preparations have begun even before Trump’s inauguration – Trump’s transition team’s plans are immediate, withdrawal expert says
The Financial Times was the first to talk about these plans, citing two experts. The second expert, former White House Covid-19 response coordinator Ashish Jha, was not immediately available for comment. Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The plan is in line with Trump’s long-standing criticism of the UN health agency. If the United States leaves the World Health Organization, it would constitute a radical shift in global health policy and further isolate Washington from international efforts to combat the pandemic.
WHO critic on Trump’s team
Trump has nominated several WHO critics to top public health positions, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was also included. Kennedy even expressed doubts about the Covid vaccine. Trump nominated Robert F. Kennedy to be US Secretary of Health. The department oversees all major health agencies in the United States, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration.
Trump left the World Health Organization during his last term as well
Trump also removed America from the World Health Organization in the final days of his first term in 2020. But six months after this incident, Joe Biden, who became president, reversed Trump’s decision. Trump said the agency failed to hold China accountable for the initial spread of Covid-19. He has repeatedly described the World Health Organization as a puppet of Beijing. A World Health Organization spokesman declined to comment directly.
