Japan Airlines says it is hit by a cyber attack – DW – 12/26/2024

Japan Airlines (JAL) said on Thursday that it has been cyber-attacked.

It said the incident may impact flights, but did not initially confirm any specific cancellations or delays.

What else do we know about the cyber attack on JAL?

“We can confirm that we have been cyber-attacked and we are resolving the situation,” a representative for Japan Airlines told French news agency AFP. “This is likely to impact flight operations going forward.”

“There is a possibility that there may be delays and cancellations,” he said.

The airline said the attack began at 7:24 a.m. local time (2224 UTC).

The company said it has temporarily shut down the router that caused the system outage and suspended ticket sales for flights scheduled to depart on Thursday.

Public broadcaster NHK reported that more than a dozen flights were delayed at several Japanese airports, but said there were no mass cancellations or major disruptions.

other cyber attacks

JAL, Japan’s second-largest airline after All Nippon Airways, is not the only major Japanese company to suffer cyberattacks in recent years.

In 2022, Japan’s government said a cyberattack forced a Toyota supplier to halt operations at domestic plants for a day.

In June this year, video-sharing website Niconico suspended its services due to a cyber attack.

Japan’s space agency, JAXA, said it was cyberattacked in 2023, but no sensitive information was obtained.

Last week, American Airlines halted flights due to a technical problem.
