Trump supports Johnson to remain House speaker after government funding turmoil

President-elect Donald Trump is endorsing House Speaker Mike Johnson as he prepares to fight to retain his role as Republicans lead Congress in Congress.

Trump said in a post on his social media networks on Monday that Johnson “is a good, hard-working, religious man” and said the Louisiana Republican “will do the right thing, and we will keep winning.”

“Mike has my full support,” Trump wrote.

Johnson’s continued leadership seemed under threat after a fight over the federal funding plan threatened a government shutdown before Christmas. Although an agreement was reached, the controversy showed the limits of Johnson’s influence and exposed cracks in his party’s support.

The speaker’s first two funding plans collapsed as Trump, who will not be sworn into office until January 20, intervened with calls to suspend or remove the government debt ceiling.

Johnson, who has worked hard to stay close to Trump, assured the president-elect that he would meet his demands to raise the debt ceiling in 2025.

Trump remained silent about Johnson’s fate for more than a week before the leadership vote on January 3, while some Republicans have said they would not support Johnson for the role.
