France said on Tuesday it had carried out airstrikes against Islamic State terrorist targets in Syria.
French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu said in a post on Twitter that the strikes occurred on Sunday, but did not specify where in Syria they occurred.
The French action follows a series of US strikes on Islamic State targets in the weeks since rebels ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from power.
Islamic State militants took control of large areas of eastern Syria and western Iraq in 2014, prompting an international response that included a US-led coalition aimed at defeating the group.
The militants have lost most of the territory they had captured, but they are still present in Syria.
The Western military strikes come amid questions rising over Syria’s political and security future after the fall of Assad’s government.
The rebels, who led a quick advance that ended with Assad leaving the country, have announced they will disband all rebel groups and integrate them under the Syrian army.
Syria’s new authorities on Tuesday announced the selection of Murhaf Abu Qasra as the new defense minister.
Qasra Hayat was a key figure in the Tahrir al-Sham group that led rebels to remove Assad from power.
