Hundreds of live fish being transported through northern Germany died in a road accident caused by slippery roads late Friday night.
German officials reported several accidents in the region amid the snowfall from Friday night into the early hours of Saturday.
Hundreds of fish scattered on the road
One accident in particular was very tragic.
A truck carrying about 7,100 live fish crashed into two other trucks and a car on the A1 highway between the cities of Bremen and Hamburg. Four people were injured in the accident, including a passenger who was seriously injured.
The Sittenson Fire Department described the collision as “particularly serious.”
“There were several thousand fish lying on the road and in ditches along the banks,” the fire department said. “The animals received all help too late, they died at the crash site.”
Police said the collision caused about €200,000 (about $206,270) in damage.
Several other accidents due to slippery road conditions were also recorded in northern Germany.
Police in Worden, near Bremen, reported about 20 accidents, while authorities in Paine, between Hanover and Braunschweig, reported 17 accidents.
