Italy says Iran has released Italian journalist Sala

Italian journalist Cecilia Sala was released from an Iranian prison on Wednesday and was returning home, the office of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said.

His release came three weeks after he was detained in Tehran while working on a journalist visa.

Iran accused Salah of “violating the law of the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

Meloni’s office praised the “intensive work across diplomatic and intelligence channels” in securing Sala’s release.

Iran has denied any connection between Sala’s detention and the arrest of an Iranian businessman by Italian authorities a few days earlier. The United States accused Iran of illegally supplying drone parts used in the attack that killed three American service members in Jordan. Iran has denied any involvement in the attack.

Some information for this report came from the Associated Press, Agence France-Presse and Reuters.
