Nicolas Maduro was sworn in as Venezuela’s leader for a new six-year term on Friday morning. As soon as Maduro was sworn in, the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom announced a new round of sanctions against officials and others in his government. Later on Friday the opposition described it as a coup and signaled a “new phase” of the conflict.
