The number of regular bankruptcies is increasing sharply

According to preliminary information from Destatis, 13.8% more regular bankruptcies were filed in December 2024 than in the previous year. It should be noted that the applications are only included in the statistics after the first decision of the insolvency court. In many cases, the actual date of the insolvency application is almost three months beforehand. In all of 2024, 16.8% more bankruptcies were filed than in 2023.

Final results were presented for October 2024. 2,012 corporate bankruptcies were filed, 35.9% more than in the same month last year. The creditors’ claims amount to around 3.8 billion euros, compared to 1.6 billion euros in the comparable period. Based on 10,000 companies, 5.9 corporate bankruptcies were filed in October. The transport and warehousing sector accounted for the most insolvencies per 10,000 companies, with 11.5 cases. This was followed by the construction industry with 8.9 insolvencies and the hospitality industry with 7.9 insolvencies per 10,000 companies. The number of consumer bankruptcies is 6,237, 10.8% higher than in October 2023.
