Russian President Vladimir Putin will host his Iranian counterpart this week to sign a comprehensive partnership agreement between Moscow and Tehran, the Kremlin said on Monday.
The Kremlin said a “comprehensive strategic partnership” agreement between the countries would be signed during Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian’s visit to Moscow on Friday.
It said the leaders would discuss “critical issues on the regional and international agenda” as well as plans to expand trade and cooperation in the transport, logistics and humanitarian sectors.
Ukraine and the West have accused Tehran of providing Moscow with hundreds of explosive drones for battlefield use in Ukraine and helping to begin producing them in Russia. Iranian drone deliveries, which Moscow and Tehran reject, have allowed long-range drone attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure.
In return, Iran wants sophisticated Russian weapons such as long-range air defense systems and fighter jets to help defend against potential Israeli attacks.
Pezeshkian will visit Moscow three days before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, who has promised to broker a peace deal on Ukraine.
