Indian police in Mumbai on Sunday arrested a 30-year-old suspect in connection with the stabbing death of Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan.
“Primary evidence suggests that the accused is a Bangladeshi national and changed his name after entering India illegally,” senior police officer Dixit Gedam said at a press conference.
Gedam said the suspect, arrested on the outskirts of Mumbai, was working with a domestic help agency after coming to the city five or six months ago, adding that police would seek the suspect’s custody for further investigation.
According to the police, preliminary evidence showed that the suspect had entered Khan’s house with the intention of stealing.
Bollywood shocked by the attack
Khan was stabbed six times at his home in Mumbai on Thursday in an attack that shocked the country’s film industry. It also raised concerns about the lack of security in Mumbai, which is home to many Bollywood actors.
Doctors said the 54-year-old man had suffered stab wounds to his spine, neck and hands. A female employee of Khan’s house was also injured in the attack.
His doctors said that the actor, who underwent surgery, is out of danger and has left the hospital.
Khan, who is also a filmmaker, has acted in approximately 70 films and television series and has won several awards, including seven Filmfare Awards, for his roles. He is the son of former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore.
