In his final hours in office, US President Joe Biden has pardoned Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired Gen. Mark Milley and members of the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
In a statement, Biden said the officers “do not deserve to be the target of an unfair and politically motivated prosecution.”
“These are extraordinary circumstances and there is nothing I can do in good conscience,” Biden said. “Baseless and politically motivated investigations wreak havoc on the lives, safety and financial security of targeted individuals and their families.”
Biden’s decision comes after incoming President Donald Trump warned of a list of enemies who have overtaken him politically or attempted to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election and his role in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley called Trump a fascist and detailed Trump’s behavior around the January 6 insurrection.
