Scholz, Zelensky to speak at WEF launch – DW – 01/21/2025

The World Economic Forum opened on Tuesday, just hours after the inauguration of US President Donald Trump.

Global business and political leaders are meeting in the Swiss resort city of Davos as the world grapples with multiple crises, among them the ongoing war in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war.

Trump has already signed several executive orders following a fiery inaugural address in which he vowed to “put America first.”

His return to the White House will almost certainly bring heavy tariffs on China and possibly even allies such as Canada and the EU, should he stay true to his promise to “not impose tariffs and taxes on foreign countries.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will open proceedings in Davos and gave an indication of the tone expected at this year’s talks.

“I came to Davos to meet leaders, tackle global challenges, and build new partnerships. In an age of growing division, the Davos spirit offers opportunities to innovate and enhance our prosperity. In this spirit, we need to avoid the global race We need to work together all the way down,” von der Leyen said in a post on X.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected to deliver an address later today, followed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
