Trump and Bukele have their first telephone contact. What did they say?

Recently, United States President Donald Trump held a call with his Salvadoran counterpart, Nayib Bukele. During the conversation, both discussed the possibility of joining forces to combat illegal immigration and dismantle international gangs such as the Tren de Aragua, according to the official White House website.

So Trump praise Bukele’s leadership in the region and described him as an example for other Western nations. It is important to highlight that This conversation is the first that the White House has revealed between Trump and a foreign president since his inauguration.although it was revealed to the media that his first official call was made on Wednesday to the Saudi crown prince, Mohamed bin Salmán.

Bukele was one of the few Latin American leaders invited to Trump’s inauguration. Although he was not able to attend, it is logical that they begin conversations from an early stage, since both have similar visions about the fight against crime and, especially, on the role of cryptocurrencies in the economy of each of their countries.

Although the call between Trump and Bukele did not address issues related to cryptoassets, the support of both leaders towards this sector suggests that it could become a key point for future collaborations. Trump recently signed an executive order to include bitcoin in the United States’ strategic reserves, fulfilling one of his campaign promises. This initiative contemplates the creation of an Advisory Council in the White House, in charge of regulating the sector and establishing an initial reserve based on bitcoins legally seized by the government. The council will be chaired by David Sacks.

Trump’s decision bears certain parallels with the actions already implemented by El Salvador. Under Bukele’s leadership, the Central American country was a pioneer in adopt bitcoin as legal tender and establish a state reserve of this cryptocurrency. The new US president wants to follow this path and more and more actors linked to space are expressing this. Cathie Wood, in an interview, expressed that the president’s recent initiatives could mark the beginning of a new era for digital assets.

Bukele has shown how a country can harness the benefits of BTC, while Trump, as he begins his new term, is delivering on his promises to the cryptocurrency industry. This convergence of pro-bitcoin policies could be the breeding ground for accelerating its global adoption. We will have to be attentive to the development of events.
