More than 500,000 people have been displaced so far in January due to heavy fighting in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the country’s Foreign Minister on Tuesday told an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
“Humanitrian’s situation determines that more than 500,000 new (internal displaced people) in North and South Kivu provinces are alone in January.”
In the worst part of a long-running conflict in more than a decade, the Rwanda-supported M33 rebels entered Goma on Monday and Goma, the capital of North Kivu and the largest city of eastern Congo. Large parts of the city are now under rebel control.
Monusco asks for international action
In DRC (Monusco), the United Nations Peace Mission Mouhhile has called for international intervention as violence in the country increases.
“The situation in Goma requires immediate and coordinated international action,” Vivian Van de Pere, Deputy Special Representative for Protection and Operations in Monusco, told the United Nations Security Council in New York.

Rubio urged a ceasefire in a call with Kagame

According to the European Union, the total number of people displaced in the country is now more than 7 million.
