The Imam of Ismaili Muslims, Aga Khan, died at the age of 88 in Lisbon, his foundation announced on Tuesday.
“His His Excellency Prince Karim Al-Husaini, Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of Shia Ismaili Muslims and the direct descendants of Prophet Muhammad (peace), died on 4 February 2025 by his family,” Aga Khan The Foundation posted on social media.
“The announcement of his nominated successor will be followed,” this will be added in relation to the fifth person to hold the post sent to the 19th century.

Those who were the direct descendants of the Prophet Muhammad behind them, Aga Khan became a spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims as a Harvard graduate at the age of 20. He put a material empire on billions of dollars in the construction of homes, hospitals and schools in developing countries.
Middle and Southern Asia, Africa and Middle East, mostly currently, the number of Ismaili communities is about 12 to 15 million people, according to its website. It is a branch of Shia Islam.
Aga Khan So Hero is located in the British and Portuguese Citizenship and Ismaili leadership, Portuguese capital Lisbon, where there is an important community.
Despite his role as a spiritual head of Ismaili Muslims, he was reluctant to talk about the Middle East conflicts, religious fundamentalism or Sunni-oriented stress.
Reactions
United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres has paid tribute to the spiritual leader.
Hey, “deeply unhappy” on the news, “describing Aga Khan as a symbol of peace, tolerance and compassion in our troubled world.”
Nobel Peace Prize winner and education campaigner Malala Yousafzai said Aga Khan’s legacy “will be through the worldwide education, health and development through incredible work.”
