Emergency declared as trembling continues – DW – 02/06/2025

Officers in Greece on Thursday moved to declare an emergency on the island of Santorini as there was a possibility of a possible major earthquake in the continuous shock.

The region has been surrounded by thousands of tremors and more than a hundred earthquakes since 26 January.

Emergency measures in effect till 3 March

The Greek Civil Defense Ministry released the announcement that allows officials to raise heavy equipment and emergency personnel quickly.

The ministry said that the announcement will be applicable from 1 February and will remain in effect till 3 March.

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marakis said on Thursday that the “entire state mechanism of Greece has been” gathered “to prepare” for any event.

More than 11,000 people have escaped from the boat and by airplane, adding additional travel to both forms of transport with travel operators.

The German news agency DPA reported that about two-thirds of the islands had abandoned and it was not clear how many tourists were in the popular holiday hotspot.

Thousands of shocks recorded

The Earthquake at the Ethens Geodionamic Institute said that till date 110 earthquakes of wax have been measured to measure between 4.0 and 4.9.

The strongest earthquake so far was 5.2 measuring, which was recorded on Wednesday evening.

The institute said that from 26 January, more than 6,000 shocks were recorded in the Aegean Sea near the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Anafi and iOS.

Experts say the current seismic activity is unprecedented and they cannot say with certainty when the situation becomes normal.

The AFP news agency quoted the Greece earthquake plan and the Protection Authority head, as a Proto Programa Radio, “Most likely to continue for a few days or weeks.”
