Washington: PM Narendra Modi will visit America on 12-13 February. US President Donald Trump has invited PM Modi to come to America. This will be his first meeting in Trump’s second term. The agenda associated with the journey involves building a strong Indo-US global strategic partnership. During PM Modi’s visit, focus can be focused on increasing cooperation in business, nuclear energy, defense, new technology, fighting terrorism and cooperation in Indo Pacific. Apart from this, delay in business, illegal migration and visa processes can also be a matter of discussion.
India can also talk about cooperation with Trump on the ‘India-Midil East-Europe Corridor. Trump may have threatened high tariffs, but a business agreement may be expected. During this visit, PM Modi may also have talks with American business leaders and Alan Musk. Earlier, when Trump was President, PM Modi went to America in 2017. Trump traveled to India in February 2020. Since November 2024, there has been a conversation between PM Modi and Trump twice. Relationship between India and America
- Bilateral relations: India and the United States started a strategic partnership in 2005. During Trump’s visit to India in February 2020, Indo-US relations were extended to a comprehensive global strategic partnership. The Indo-Pacific sector became important for the US foreign policy during the first trump administration. India, Japan, America and Australia formed the quad. The Trump administration extended it to a ministerial tier talks.
- Business and Investment: America is the largest trading partner in India. In 2023 bilateral trade was $ 190 billion. India has a $ 36 billion trade surplus with the US. In 2023-24, America was the third largest FDI in India, through which an investment of $ 5 billion came.
- Energy Partnership: According to the report published in the Times of India, America is the sixth largest energy business partner in India. The Indo-US hydrocarbon trade in 2023-24 was $ 13.6 billion.
- Education and Cultural Cooperation: In the year 2024, there was a ‘cultural property agreement’ to prevent illegal smuggling of antiquities between India and the US. In 2016, the US returned 578 antiquities to India.
- Defense Cooperation: There is a big defense cooperation between India and America. In 2015, the ‘new outline’ for Indo-US defense cooperation has been renewed for 10 years. In 2016, defense relations were given the status of major defense partnership. India has bought a defense equipment of more than $ 20 billion from the US since 2008, including C-130J, C-17 and Apache.
