‘Harshit’ challenges for Tissia Tutal, director of the new festival
Compared to Kan and Venice, Berlin is always considered the most political of Europe’s major film festival.
“People often ask us if we are a political festival. And yes, while I would say that we are a social festival, politics is in our DNA. […] Berlin is a city immersed in history. We are not far from this, “The festival director Trissia Tutal said, before this year’s program, the first edition under her leadership.
Last year, criticism of Israeli policies during the awards celebrations – especially by Israeli and Palestinian directors “no other land” – led the allegations of antisimitism by some German politicians.
The festival is largely funded publicly, Tutles are now facing the challenge of meeting the needs of German MPs, while all artists allow them to express them independently.
The US -born curator said in the performance of the program that “a lot of filmmakers from Arab countries have contacted us in the last week, just to ensure that the festival is a place for open dialogue and discourse.”
“This was a challenge, let’s be honest. But this year has been really challenging. It is challenging for every festival. We are living in a world that is very divisive and divided and divided and divided and divided and divided. And divided and divided and divided and divided and divided [in which] The discourse is not always favorable and open, “he said, the process of keeping the program together with the festival team was still” really joyful and pleasant, and a real privilege. ,
Beyond the political debate, one of the missions of the Tutle is to revive the Berlin Festival through a modern and refreshing program.
Keeping this goal in mind, an example of changes he has done is the introduction of a new competitive sidebar called perspective. This will exclude feature debut especially, “provides a more key platform for emerging filmmakers,” she said. One of the competitive tasks will win the best first feature award, which comes with € 50,000 ($ 52,000) cash prize.
Hopefully, the way enthusiasts of cinema want to find new voices that they want to follow for the coming years.
