Canadian warship China passing through Taiwan Strait – DW – 02/17/2025

On Monday, the Chinese army said that a Canadian warship that passed through Taiwan Strait, “reduces peace.”

A statement by a Chinese military spokesman said that Canada’s actions “deliberately reduce trouble and reduce peace and stability in Taiwan Strait.”

The statement said that Beijing sent its air and naval forces around the area, and “will fully counter all dangers and provocative.”

Canada did not make any immediate statement. The ship passed through Taiwan Strait on Sunday.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense said that “Canada has once again taken concrete action to protect the freedom, peace and openness of Taiwan Strait and demonstrated its firm position that Taiwan Strait is international water.”

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry said that the Canadian ship passed the straw of Taiwan a few days after passing two American ships.

Self-shown island Taiwan is seen as its territory by China. Taiwan Strait separates Taiwan from the mainland from China, and the Beijing claims the jurisdiction on the water body.

So on Monday, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said it had seen 41 Chinese aircraft and nine warships near its area in the last 24 hours.
