Man gets life for rape, killing Irish tourist – DW – 02/17/2025

A court in India has jailed a 31 -year -old man for the rape and murder of an Irish backpacker in the Western Resort State Goa about eight years ago.

The body of 28 -year -old Danielle McLaglin was found in March 2017 by a farmer near Palolem Beach in Goa.

Autopsy concluded that he died due to brain damage and strangulation.

The police later accused local resident Vikat Bhagat of crime and was found guilty on Friday.

Family ‘thanks’ for justice

McLaglin, who was from Bankrana in Ireland, was celebrating the Indian festival of Holi in the region that night before it was found.

Rape victims cannot usually be nominated under Indian law, however, McLaglin’s family spoke to the media about their case in an attempt to raise awareness.

In a statement quoted by local media, he said he was “thanks to everyone involved in our fight for justice”.

“They have treated her like their daughter and is tirelessly fogt for her.”

India implemented strict sexual harassment laws and established fast-track special courts in 2012 after gang rape of a woman in Delhi bus. The case surprised the country, but for more than a decade, violence against women is a problem in India.

Last month, a police volunteer was sentenced to life imprisonment in the eastern city of Kolkata, where he worked, where he worked.
