Trump says he will slap European goods with 25% TAIF – DW – 02/26/2025

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that European cars and other items would be hit with 25% taff.

Trump told reporters during the first cabinet meeting of his second term, “We have taken a decision and we will announce it very soon, and it will usually be 25%, and it will be on cars, and will be on everything.”

Trump accused Europe of taking advantage of the United States.

“They do not accept our cars. They do not accept, our farm products necessarily accept. And we accept everything of them,” Trump said.

He claimed, without proof, that the European Union (EU) was made “to screw the United States”.

The European Union currently collects 10% tariffs on vehicle imports, which is four times 2.5% of the rate of American passenger car tariff.

The European Union vows for the real ‘strength’ for us

The European Commission, the Executive Branch of the European Union, shot back and stated that it is the “largest free market in the world” and “a boon for the United States.”

It states that the European Union’s single market has “provided trade facilities, reduced the cost for American exporters, and coordinated standards and regulations in 27 countries.”

A spokesman for the Commission said, “The European Union will react to independent and fair trade against firm and immediately inappropriate obstacles, in which Tahruding is used to challenge legal and non-discriminatory policies.”
