The army said on Saturday that at least four workers have died and five are still missing after an avalanche in the northern Himalayan state of India, Uttarakhand.
When the avalanche was hit on Friday, more than 50 people working at a highway construction site near Man Pass were away.
The rescue teams were later able to pull most of the workers with snow, but four of them later died of injuries.
Snifer dogs and military helicopters have been deployed in the region to help in search of the five who are still missing, but snow storms and low temperatures have done their work.
“The rescue operations were slow due to heavy snowfall,” said Kamlesh Kamal, a spokesman for the Indo-Tibetan police, and the area remained inaccessible. “

The army said some injured workers were rushed to the hospital or “priority for withdrawal,” without specifying.
Uttarakhand state Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that rescue teams were “engaged in frequent relief efforts.”
“The government is fully committed to providing all possible assistance to the affected people in this hour of crisis,” Heer said in a post on X.
Avalanche and landslides are quite common in the Himalayan region, which have been severely affected by climate change.
In 2021, about 100 people died in Uttarakhand in a river after a huge glacier Chunk Fur and triggered the flash flood.
