Bill was passed in both houses
Explain that Congress, AIMIM and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have challenged this law in the Supreme Court and filed separate petitions. The purpose of this new law is to prevent discrimination, misuse and occupation of land in Waqf properties. The government says that this law is not against any religion and is not anti -Muslim.
The Waqf Amendment Bill was introduced in Parliament after the six -month discussion and the formation of the Joint Parliamentary Committee. In the Rajya Sabha, 128 MPs voted in favor of this bill and 95 voted against it. Earlier on Thursday, the bill passed in the Lok Sabha, where 288 MPs supported it and 232 MPs protested.
Opposition reached Supreme Court
Congress MP Mohammad Javed, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi and AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan have filed petitions in the Supreme Court. They say that the Waqf (Amendment) law discriminates against Muslims and violates their fundamental rights. The new law has also been opposed by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB). The board has announced a peaceful protests across the country. However, the government says that this law will benefit Muslim women and Waqf properties can be managed in a correct and transparent manner.
