Washington. There is a race to become the world’s superpower in America and China. Trade War has brought both countries to each other. The US government headed by the Donald Trump has imposed a tariff of more than 200% on China, making Xi Jinping outspoken. However, this tariff game is not over yet. Taking a step ahead, the US has imposed new duty on solar imports from four southeast Asian countries, providing most solar panels to the country.

An interesting thing is that these four countries are deeply related to China. The US decision is the result of a year long trade investigation, which found that solar manufacturers in South-East Asia are taking advantage of government subsidy and selling their exports in the US at a lower rates than production costs. The investigation was demanded by domestic solar manufacturers and it was started during the tenure of former President Joe Biden.

These fees levied on solar cells and panels made in Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam are a clear victory for American manufacturers, but it can increase the development cost of renewable energy sector already facing policy and economic challenges. US President Donald Trump is trying to promote fossil fuel and has cut the support of green projects.

The new solar fee will be in addition to the tariffs which have been levied by Trump and who have reversed global supply chains and markets. The purpose of anti-dumping and counterving duties, as they are called, is to balance the value of perceived unfair subsidies and pricing, as calculated by the Commerce Department.

According to BloombergenEF, the US imported a solar equipment of US $ 12.9 billion (17 billion Singapore dollars) from four countries in 2024, which would be under the new fee. This is about 77 percent of the total module imports.
