Tanzania has arrested a senior member of the country’s main protest, while trying to fly to Belgium for a democracy conference, the Chadema Party said on Tuesday.
Amani Golugawa, Deputy General Secretary of Chadema, who extends at Julius Nerrere International Airport and held at the Central Police Station in Capital City Dar S Salaam from Monday, his party said on X.
A gathering of Golugwa Center-rights political parties was due to the visit of Brussels to represent Chadema in the International Democracy Union Conference (IDU).
The police confirmed the arrest in a statement posted on Instagram, alleging that Golugawa had a tendency to leave and return in the country without following the legal process. “
The post said, “Dar S Salaam Police Special Zone continues with investigation on the matter in collaboration with other security organs.”
What is the situation in Tanzania?
The arrest is the latest to target the opposition party in the East African nation, which is gearing up for elections in October.
Human rights groups and critics have accused the Tanzania government to Samiya Suluhu Hasan – the country’s first female president, who is expected to seek a reunion – to oppress the opposition.
In April, Chadema President Tundu Lisu was arrested and accused of treason, while the party was stopped from participating in the election.
The authorities accused Lisu of disturbing unrest and disrupting elections during their speeches, in which he and the party demanded major election reforms for a process, which they say that the ruling party is in favor of Cham Mapinduji (CCM).
Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Lisu was arrested on “fabricated allegations”. HRW accused the dance dance authorities of “disqualifying it” for electoral reforms to use Chadema’s calls for electoral reforms in the October elections.
HRW said Previous month While some measures have been taken to improve the country’s rights records, the dance led by Hasan “has continued abuses with the government’s critics” led by Hasan.
Hasan has insisted that his government is committed to defending human rights.
What has been the reaction to Golugwa’s arrest?
In a post on X, Idu stated that it “illegally arrests and attacks of Golugawa”.
IDU said, “Opposition voices violate the origin of silenceting voice democracy. We call for their immediate release and urge global pressure on dance to maintain human rights.”
