How does this effect Middle East? – DW – 05/13/2025

The Kurdish terrorist group is known as PKK, announced this week that it would finish “working in the name of PKK”. This announcement has been seen as the end of a decades long armed rebellion, one that the cost of an estimated 40,000 people between the Turkish state and the Kurdish rights or freedom within Turkey.

But the announcement of this week will not affect Turkey only. Kurdish are about 40 million-fierce ethnic groups. If they had their own country, it would have been located around the point where Syrian, Iraqi, Iranian and Turkish borders are found. In each of those countries, as an ethnic minority, various Kurdish resistance groups and political parties by Kurdish self -determination, some violent, some non -violent. Many people are associated with PKK, or Kurdish worker’s party, in a way or another.

“Without a doubt, this is a very important declaration,” for Joseph, a Turkish expert and former analyst expert, a think tank in Washington recently closed by the Trump administration. “But I think more imported parts are ahead. It is a million dollars. PKK is only one of the organizations within the Kurdish movement in Turkey and Turkey, other components of this movement.”

Syrian Kurd: Want Autonomy

After the 2011 Syrian revolution turned into a cruel civil war, the Kurdish groups were able to gain control over parts of the northeastern parts of the country, where many Syrian Kurdish live. Kurds make somewhere between 8% and 10% of the Syrian population.

The region, now known as the democratic autonomous administration of North and Eastern Syria, or Daanes, is controlled by a group known as Syrian democratic forces, or SDF.

The SDF has a military force of about 100,000 men and women, and its self-declared autonomous administration includes one third of the Syrian area and 70% oil and gas resources, “Real Aydintasbas, to connect the senior policy partner in the European Council, in relations, in relations, in relations. 1 February comment,

The SDF collaborated with American troops in fighting against the extremist group known as the “Islamic State” in Syria.

American troops patrolled Syrian northeastern city of Cumysali in Haskeh province, mostly controlled by the Kurdish-Netroine Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on 9 January 2025.

The SDF regularly denies any PKK affiliation and SDF commanders have stated that PKK co-founder Abdullah Oklan’s call does not directly affect them to remove PKK.

But observers say it is well known that veteran PKK fighters form an integral part of military leadership and PKK members of the Kurdish population in Iran, Iraq and Turkey, therefore play an important role there.

Turkey has accused the SDF of having only one PKK proxy. As a result, groups supporting it within Türkiye and Syria have regularly bombed or attacked SDF.

Change luck for SDF

In a phase during the Syrian Civil War, SDF was in a powerful position – the ruling regime left him alone and had an AUS. However, since the exclusion of dictator Bashar Assad last December, the fortune’s luck has changed for worse.

US President Donald Trump says he planned to pull American troops out of Syria; He first prevented Turkey from fighting more rigorously against SDF. And the new Syrian government, which is supported by Turkey, wants to ensure that Syria is completely valuable, Kurdish-controlled region’s tea away from tea.

In March, the SDF and the government in Damascus agreed that it does not wild and works together. Experts say that there is no doubt that Turkey was carefully looking at whether the SDF has called for more Kurdish autonomy, something that does not want to see on its border with Syria.

But this week the announcement of PKK wants to become Rasur Türkiye, experts argue.

The deal between SDF and Damascus Wolded “a successful peace and reconciliation process between Turkey and PKK,” Vladimir Van Wilzberg, has been written for the beauty of the recently published book, “Northern Syria of The Kurds”. Washington Institute Think Tank recently. “SDF … claims that the PKK dismantry process is unrelated to its conversation. Yet it admits that a PKK deal is a restriction for Turkish attacks in Syria, the sign Ankara theoretical theoretical theoretical will be less concerned about a constant SDF range.

Things can still be wrong.

Turkish analyst told DW, “Some of PKK supporters are not happy with this.”

Therefore more militant members are likely to continue the fight, which may disturb or derail new mockery-SDF detens.

Iraqi Kurdish: Turkish or PKK?

Since the beginning of the 1980s, PKK members have performed a Soud Saf shelter in Kandil Mountains in Northern Iraq. Candil is part of a large mountain range that extends to southern Turkish and Northeast Syria.

PKK’s relationship with local authorities in Iraq is a complex. The northern, Kurdish part of Iraq is a semi-late area-ie, it is still part of the country, but has a parliament, military and elections. The two major Iraqi Kurdish political parties have different approaches on the PKK.

The patriotic association of Kurdistan, or Puk, is close to Iran and PKK. Puk founder Jalal Talabani once famous once said that he also does not even hand over the “Kurdish cat” to Turkey.

The second party, the Kurdistan Democratic Party, or KDP, is close to Turkey and the Turkish army is allowed to build more than 100 military outposts in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Through the thesis, and with drones and fighter jets, the Turkish army regularly attacked the alleged PKK sites in Iraq. Local officials regularly complain about this in both Iraqi Kurdistan and Federal Iraq.

“Solving [PKK-Turkey] The conflict will open the way for a final Turkish military withdrawal from the Iraqi region, ” The analyst of the Think Tank Crisis Group wrote in March“Ankara’s overall relationship with Baghdad and helping both of them capable of moving forward.”

Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Aarji has said that his country now wants to see the full return of Türkiye and PKK forces.

It is difficult to know how it will almost.

“They can eventually interact on a pullback, but it is unlikely in the short term,” can. “Because this is a major change in Turkish foreign policy and I do not think Turkish want to take advantage of army or intelligence.”

In fact, in fact, “KDP’s lead may still welcome a limited Turkish military appearance as an imbalance to the Iranian influence,” expert outlet, amavaj media Written earlier this year“Especially American forces continue to interact with Iraq on their return.”

The Iraqi Kurdish political parties and the SDF can play a role in the future of fugitive PKK fighters after discocal of both group. He said that there are a lot of speculation that some fighters may be able to live in Iraqi Kurdistan or go to SDF in Syria.
