Washington: An Indian -origin person in America told about his painful experience of custody. Visiting scholar Badar Khan Suri at Georgetown University was recently detained by American Immigration Officers on charges of alleged relations with Hamas. He was released this week. During this, while sharing his experience, he called it inhuman. He revealed his painful experiences in a conversation with American media after his release from Texas’s Preyland Detention Center. This custody not only affected his personal life, but also questioned the fundamental rights like freedom of expression.

Khan Suri was arrested by agents in plain clothes outside his house in Arlington, Virginia. He was kept in custody for two months, during which he was sent from here to there in many detention centers. He told NBC News, ‘I did not even see my shadow for seven-eight days. I did not know where I was being taken or what was happening to me. My ankle, wrist and whole body were stuck in chains.

There was also a painful time for the family

He further said, ‘There was no concrete allegation. I was treated like a lower level person. This was very painful for me and my family. Khan Suri said that his biggest concern was about his children. His nine -year -old son and five -year -old twin children were going through mental stress during this period. His wife told that his son used to cry continuously and he needed a counselor.

Big decision in bail

Alexandria, Virginia’s US District Judge Petricia Gills on Wednesday ordered the immediate release of Khan Suri. The judge said in his judgment that his custody violated the first amendment of the US Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression. This decision of the judge not only gave Khan Suri a chance to meet his family again, but also points that it is illegal to keep someone in custody without concrete evidence.

After the release, Khan Suri said, ‘I am happy to come back to my family, but this experience has shook me. I want no one else to become a victim of such injustice.

Studying from India

Badar Khan Suri has studied Jamia Millia Islamia in India. According to the website of Georgetown University, he was teaching a course on majority and minority rights in South Asia. However, the reason behind his arrest was stated to be an alleged relationship with Hamas, which the US has declared a terrorist organization.
