Indian writer and activist Banu Mushtaq, on Tuesday awarded the International Booker Award for his short story collection “Heart Lamp,”, the first Kannada-language writer to win the award for the translated story.
The 77 -year -old Mushtaq will share the £ 50,000 ($ 67,000, € 59.300) with his translator Deepa Bhaasti, who helped choose stories depicted in the award -winning collection.
This is the first time that a collection of small stories receives awards. So make Bhatshi the first Indian translator to win the award in your current form adopted in 2016.
The annual International Booker Award is run with the Booker Award for the English language story, but is later submitted in a decline.
Max Porter Hales ‘Heart Lamp’
The award ceremony was held at the Tate Modern Museum in London, and the Bestseling Booker Award-Lumb was announced by the author Max Porter, who presided over the voting panel.
Porter did “Heart Lamp” “really new for English readers”.
“Thesis is beautiful, busy, life-affected stories up from Kannada, associated with extraordinary socio-political prosperity of other languages and dialects,” said Porter.
“It speaks of women’s life, reproductive rights, beliefs, caste, power and oppression.”
Mushtaq called his victory ‘upside down’
During his acceptance speech, Mushtaq said the award as a “great honor”, saying that he is “not as a person but with many others as a voice raised in the chorus.”
“This moment seems like a thousand fireflies that the same sky – brief, talented and upcoming collective,” he said.
Kannada is mainly spoken by some 65 million people in southern India.
Mushtaq wrote short stories depicted in the collection between 1990 and 2023. Bheshi’s curition and translation was eager to preserve the multilingual nature of southern India.
The collection was important for its dry and gentle humor, funny style and comment on issues, which discovers patriarchy, cascism and religious conservatives.
