German Chancellor Frederick Merz on Wednesday damaged the hopes of a quick end of the war in Ukraine.
“Currently there is no indication that it will end quickly,” Merz said in Berlin. However, when fulfilling diplomatic efforts to end the war, he referred to the Pope’s possible arbitration as a “final worldly right”.
Merz said that only one could expect that it would be at least possible to bring together a constructive parties together for a creative discussion in the Vatican. The Chancellor emphasized the importance of Germany for “active, accessory, strong” roles in peace efforts.
Trump: ‘This is not my war’
Merz’s comment followed Monday’s telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
After the call, Trump wrote that Russia and Ukraine “immediately would begin negotiations towards a ceasefire and, more imported, will end for war.” So he mentioned that Vatican said that it would be very interested in hosting the conversation.
Trump warned his warning that if there is no progress in the talks, he could leave the process to find a ceasefire. “This is not my war,” he told reporters.
On Tuesday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that Pope Leo XIV had confirmed Vatican’s desire to host peace talks between the two sides. The Vatican has not issued a public statement on the case.
Trump influenced Putin, says pistorius
Meanwhile, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that Trump termed his influence on Putin as wrong.
“I suspect that he incorrectly assessed the situation of his conversation,” Pistorius told Dynwalandfank Public Radio Broadcaster, referring to Trump’s clearly abandoned efforts to accept Putin unconditionally 30-day ceasefire.
Pistorius said, “Nothing is getting real. These are all new places, new deadlines – and means that Vladimir Putin can continue his attacks on Ukraine. But there is no peace in sight,” Pistorius said.
Since the phone call between Russian and the US did not make any progress in Ukraine peace talks, Europe was ready to announce new sanctions on Russia.
Pistorius urged further action to cut Russia’s financial lines.
“Target should be to curb a considerable flow of money in Russia’s state cardoners, which helps in the finance of war,” he said.
The German Defense Minister argued that only by doing so Russia in the West could be effectively degraded, as an example, citing revenue from Russian oil and gas exports, in Ukraine.
Pistorius emphasized the need to increase Ukraine’s recess efforts, given that the country has a production capacity in its arms industry, but reduces the discovery of fully using it.
“We want to step together and the thesis capacity gaps,” said Pistorius.
