Canadian President Donald Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile is a “high level” talks with the United States when he attended the missile defense program, Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Wednesday.
Trump announced his plans on the previous day, with ground-and space-based capabilities to develop multi-layered, $ 175 billion (€ 155 billion) system, which defend against a wide range of enemies such as drones, hyperk and cruise missiles and intercontinental ballistic missiles.
The US President said that he hoped that the missile shield would be ready by the end of its second term in 2029.
Canada says that is good for security
Speaking at a news conference in Ottawa on Wednesday, Carney confirmed that he had discussed with Trump about the program, saying that there was a conversation between senior officials.
Carney warned of new and growing missile threats, warning that “could not come from space in a very distant future,” saying that his government “takes” those threats “seriously”.
“Is this a good idea for Canada? Yes, Canadian is good for safety for people,” said the newly elected Prime Minister.
He said, “We are conscious that we have an ability, if we choose so, to fulfill the golden dome with investment in partnership (with the US). And this is something we are seeing and something that is discussed at a high level,” he said to reporters.
He did not give much information about how much Canada can contribute to the program.
Troubled us about Canada
Washington and Ottawa are partners in the North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad), which is responsible for protecting the airspace in both countries.
Also, Canada is demanding to diversify its trade and safety alliances between relations with the US.
It recently announced a review of a major purchase of US -made F -35 fighter jets and signed an agreement with Australia to develop the Arctic radar system.
Trump has harassed Canada, saying that it should be the 51st American state.
Carney has said that Canada’s old relationship with the US, which was based on ever increasing integration, is over.
